Here's a list (in no particular order) with an approximate episode number in parenthesis; A psychological horror about mutated humans, this is one of my most recommended anime. It's bloody, dark and there are scenes of partial nudity so it may not be for everyone but the story, characters and the premise are all absolutely incredible and it's simply a must watch for anyone a fan of anime.
Another psychological anime, this time incorporated a large amount of human philosophy, it describes, very effectively, the human psyche and it's affects on those around us. A very, very well made anime, I recommend it to anyone and everyone. It's a little dark and the themes are pretty heavy so it's certainly not a relaxing or easy watch.
Yet another philosophical anime, built around Rene Descartes' Cogito Ergo Sum (I think, therefore I am), it explores the identification of oneself and it's acknowledgements. It has the possibility of being an easy watch, and it could be a difficult watch too. One could very easily watch the anime light-heartedly and not grasp any of it's meaning, hidden in the murky subtext.
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (24)
A very light-hearted anime, the first I watched and my absolute favourite, I couldn't but help fall in love with this show. It's got great characters, the best male protagonist I've ever seen (Kyon has wit and sarcasm beyond human limits, really), a great concept and lovable scenarios. It's also got the best English dub on the planet (much better than the Japanese one) so that's a big plus!
There's very little I can say about Death Note that hasn't been said before. Watch it, you can't really be an anime fan if you haven't. xD
A horror anime with a ton of gore and blood, this one is not for the faint hearted. It's a great show if you've got the guts to watch it.
- Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (24)
I can't say much for this other than what I've said about Another. Full of blood, gore, but a great watch nonetheless. I'll add more when I get home and look at my anime list. xD

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works Fate/Zero Both are about two seasons with about 24 episodes. UBW has some extra episode, like episode 0 which can be considered a pilot featuring the secondary protagonist. Fate/Zero is a prequel to Fate/Stay Night, which mostly follows the Fate route while UBW follows the UBW route. Which one you watch first is up to you, but UBW is clearer about who the protagonist is, while Zero is a lot more violent and scary. I recommend both of them, though I am never going to watch Zero again O.O

Steins;Gate Really great story about time travel and friendship and stuff. Or something. It's great. Monster This one's pretty dark, but really touching at the same time. It's also really suspenseful and you'll be hooked for sure. Shiki Shiki is... well it's darker than Monster, but it's really thought-provoking and the storytelling is pretty good. Noragami Noragami is a generally lighthearted anime about a low level god trying to make a name for himself so people will remember him. It's really, really, really good and you have to see it. Darker Than Black This one's about people who have weird supernatural powers and stuff. It's mostly about Hei, who works for a mysterious organization to take down others who are up to no good.

I'm back with more and this time, I'll add little descriptions too! It's all comedy! Again, in no particular order; [/b][li] Angel Beats (13)[/li][/ul] This is one of my favourite anime. It's got a great blend of comedy, action and concept and the ending gets me every time! Watch it if you want to start laughing and end crying!
An absolutely adorable anime about a lonely girl and finding friends. Again, one of my favourite anime, great for a good giggle, makes me smile every time. It tires to be serious here and there, sometimes successfully, but it's generally a sweet anime.
- Assassination Classroom (22)
Currently, my second favourite anime of all time, this show is amazing. It started airing in January and only one season is complete so far so get started on it before it ends up with too many episodes to watch. The funniest I've ever seen, this anime is definitely one to watch if you're up for a great laugh!
Using loud humor and awkward silences, this comedy anime described the life of three highschool girls and their wacky lives.
- Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou (12)
This is basically Nichijou but with males. That said, it's a completely seperate show that uses it's own comedy sketches so it's definitely worth a watch if you like Nichijou (or even if you don't!).
- Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko (12)
I know, it says "hentai", but that's a facade, you see! It's a rather adorable comedy anime about a pervert highschooler (well, one of them) and his reformation!
- The Devil is a Part-Timer! (13)
This one is really funny, it is. It's about a devil king and his servant finding themselves trapped in the human worls as humans and trying to fit in. It's an absolute riot, watch it!

Seconding all of Eru's recommendations in that post (haven't seen Assassination Classroom yet but I'm planning to), especially Kotoura-san and Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou! Here's a few that I really like: This show is about a girl who forgets her memories every week, and a boy who just wants to be her friend. There are ups and downs throughout the story, but it's outstandingly cute and has a great opening theme too. This show just radiates with cuteness, give it a shot! The main female lead is particularly adorable! - Hunter X Hunter[2011] (148)
This show is long, but definitely worth the watch. It contains many different themes throughout the different arcs, some darker than others, but it'll make you love and hate the characters as you watch their experiences. It has some funny moments, and amazing action, in addition to a great story. Watch it now! - Kuroko no Basket (3 seasons x 25)
This is one of the best sports anime I've seen, and definitely the one that started getting me into the genre. Kuroko no Basket aka Kuroko no Basuke, is about a presenceless boy called Kuroko as well as a boy called Kagami with an overpowering presence. These boys, in their first year, join the basketball club at Seirin High, and face many overpowering foes from a group of basketball prodigies known as the "Generation of Miracles". This show will keep you hyped and pumped up as you go through each episode, give it a try!
